Last month ago Jim Murphy confirmed that Labour will be ignoring the SNP in the forthcoming general election.
Funny enough though - SNP's Education Minister Mike Russell appears to be making a broad appeal to Scottish patriots.
He has said that he will be writing to
Oxford University Press on a matter of grave concern to all Scots. Apparently, the Oxford School Dictionary of Word Origins* has noted in their definition of the word 'decibel' that it is named after Alexander Graham Bell "American scientist and inventor of the telephone". (I have directly quoted there to avoid insulting any Scots)
The Minister said today “I will be writing to the publishers to ask that they ensure that this error is corrected in future editions. As a famous Scottish inventor, young people throughout Scotland will be well aware of Alexander Graham Bell”
Well thank goodness for that!
*The full Oxford English Dictionary is suspiciously silent on the question of Mr Bell's nationality.

Bell was indeed a Scot.
ReplyDeleteI understand that he left Scotland in disgust, however, and set up in business somewhere that recognised the talents of entrepreneurs.
A fine standard-bearer for the Scots Nats, then!
